Kama Dharma - LGBTQ+ Hindu Support
A safe community for LGBTQ+ Hindus seeking belonging, clarity, and compassion.
Why Kama Dharma Exists
For many LGBTQ+ Hindus, the path to self-acceptance is complicated by the intersection of multiple identities. Being queer in a Hindu family can mean navigating traditional expectations, spiritual questioning, and the search for community - all at once. Many LGBTQ+ Hindus have felt forced to choose between their faith and their identity, or worse, have internalized shame that they didn't have to carry.
Kama Dharma was created to break down this false choice. We know from lived experience and research that:
- Spiritual connection strengthens resilience: LGBTQ+ individuals with affirming religious communities report better mental health outcomes and lower rates of depression.
- Cultural belonging matters: Many LGBTQ+ people of color feel isolated from both their ethnic communities and predominately white LGBTQ+ spaces. Having spaces that honor both is essential.
- Parents need support too: Hindu parents often feel isolated when their children come out, lacking community and guidance rooted in their own cultural context.
- Young people deserve better: LGBTQ+ Hindu youth deserve to grow up knowing their faith includes them, their culture celebrates them, and their families can support them.
That's where we come in. Kama Dharma is a resource hub, community space, and advocacy platform dedicated to creating affirmation at every intersection of identity.
Our Mission: Affirming LGBTQ+ Identity and Hindu Faith
At Kama Dharma, we believe that queerness and Hindu spirituality are not in conflict - they can coexist beautifully. We created this space because many LGBTQ+ Hindus told us they felt torn between two worlds. Our goal is simple: help LGBTQ+ Hindus find home in their faith and their identity at the same time. We connect people seeking both spiritual belonging and authentic self-expression.
Faith & Identity
Explore the connection between Hindu philosophy and queer identity. Discover scriptural wisdom, teachings from ancient Hindu texts, and lived experiences that support your faith and who you are. Hindu philosophy includes concepts like Ardhanarishvara (half-Shiva, half-Parvati) and numerous stories of gender fluidity and same-sex relationships. We curate resources from Hinduism Today and scholarly works to help you reclaim your faith as a queer person.
Family Acceptance
Resources specifically designed for parents and families. We help bridge the gap between tradition and acceptance, building real love and trust at home. Research shows that family acceptance dramatically improves mental health outcomes. We provide guidance informed by The Family Acceptance Project, which studies family rejection and acceptance of LGBTQ+ youth.
Mental Health & Support
Access practical resources, helplines, and guidance for emotional safety and mental well-being. We're here for you, always. LGBTQ+ individuals face higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation, but supportive communities make a difference. Our crisis resources connect you with trained counselors and peer support networks.
Analytics & Research on LGBTQ+ Hindu Experiences
Understanding the experiences of LGBTQ+ Hindus requires data-driven insights combined with community stories. Our research synthesizes findings from major studies about LGBTQ+ populations, Hindu demographics, and the unique intersections they create. These statistics highlight why communities like Kama Dharma are essential for mental health, family connectivity, and spiritual fulfillment.
Global Acceptance Trends
37% of Indians surveyed by Pew Research Center (2019) said homosexuality should be accepted, showing significant progress in social attitudes. In the U.S., 8% of adults identify as LGBTQ+ (Pew, 2025), with even higher percentages among younger generations. However, in India, Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code historically criminalized same-sex relationships until the Supreme Court's 2018 decriminalization ruling. Understanding these legal and cultural contexts helps LGBTQ+ Hindus navigate identity in diaspora and home country settings.
Mental Health Impact
Family acceptance reduces suicide risk by 8.4 times among LGBTQ youth, according to research by Ryan et al. (2009). Yet 73% of LGBTQ+ adults report experiencing slurs or jokes (Pew, 2025). For LGBTQ+ individuals from religious backgrounds, the intersection of faith rejection and family rejection creates compounded trauma. Creating affirming religious spaces is therefore a public health imperative.
Religious Affiliation & Education
48% of U.S. LGBTQ+ adults identify with a religion (vs. 73% of non-LGBTQ+), with many maintaining strong spiritual connections despite facing rejection. Hindus in particular are among the most highly educated religious groups in the United States, with strong emphasis on education and family. This means many LGBTQ+ Hindus have the intellectual and creative capacity to reimagine their faith traditions in affirming ways.
