Interview: On Faith, Identity, and Spaces
At 19, "RP" is still figuring things out, as most people her age are. Living in Bangalore and balancing college, personal growth, and the expectations that come with family and culture, she describes herself as someone "still learning how to be fully honest" with who she is.
How would you describe yourself?
I'm 19, from Bangalore, and currently studying, going by she/her. Beyond that, I think I'm still becoming the person I want to be.
How did you find yourself?
It was gradual, and honestly, sometimes confusing. A lot of it came from questioning things I had accepted without thinking too deeply about them before. There was a lot of expectations of me growing up, and it was hard to pull away from the pressure of it all.
Do you feel connected to your faith today?
Yes, though maybe differently than when I was younger. I think Hinduism is both simple, yet complex at the same time. It is a religion that can be interpreted in many different ways, which really gives me the freedom to shape my belief for myself.
What kind of spaces make you feel most comfortable?
I feel most comfortable in spaces where I can freely express who I am without having to explain myself. Being treated normally, especially here, is difficult in of itself. Finding the right spaces is incredibly important, no matter who you are.
What would you say to other queer Hindus who may still be figuring themselves out?
It's a process. A lot of people feel pressure to have everything perfectly understood immediately, but identity is complicated. It is okay to take time and question things. It is okay if your relationship with faith or culture changes over time. That's just a part of life, and we all still have so much to learn.
